So you want to be a fly fisherman.
I bet you think that all it's going to take is waders, boots, a rod and some flys. Well guess again. The well healed flyguy has more gadges and thingamabobs than Carter has little pills. Here is a list of some of the other things you will need.
Hemostats - These handy little medical pliers serve a myriad of usefull functions from dehooking a fish to crimping the barb on your fly. Keep them clipped on your vest.
Nail Clippers - Use them to clip unwanted leader excess and knots off your fly. A good set of clippers should include the following: 1. Nail knot tool - Invaluable for tying the knots that attach leaders to flyline. 2. A lacquer clearer- this is a small pin that lets you clear the head of your hooks.
Hook sharpner- Keeping your hooks sharp will let you hook and land more fish.
Magnifying Glass- Lets you see the eyes of the smallest flys.
A Small seine Net- Can't catch fish with out knowing what the fish are eating. This net will let you pick some off the top.
Stomach pump - Lets you see what the fish have been eating.
Mag Light - When
it gets dark, hooks and leaders are hard to see.
There are thousands of more items and gadgets that you can buy from Orvis, Cabelas, L.L.Bean or any of the other outfitters out there. For a good on-line place try The Fly Shop. Have fun fishing. Enjoy your toys.
